The Center for Coastal Studies kiosk on MacMillan Pier has received a facelift, and new technology, thanks to the efforts of CCS volunteer and Infrastructure Consultant Larry Franke and Facilities Manager Nat Doane, and the support of our donors.

The CCS kiosk plays an important role in outreach to the community. Visitors to the pier and passengers on the nearby whale watches regularly drop by to learn about the Center and to purchase hats and T-shirts. That role has now been expanded with the addition of an exterior flatscreen TV that explains the varied research conducted by the Center.

The continuous video played on the flatscreen was produced and edited by Larry, with the help of Cathrine Macort, the Center’s director of administration and operations.

“It was a team effort, the goal was to acquaint the general public with all the things the Center does,” said Larry, who is also responsible for producing the touch-screen video in the visitors’ center at the Hiebert Marine Lab’s Spinnaker exhibit.

In addition to the flatscreen TV, visitors to the kiosk will notice a new window, new trim, new door, and new cedar shingles on all the exterior walls.

“It’ll be all freshened up and ready for when we reopen the kiosk in May!” said Nat.
