owen-nicholsThe Center for Coastal Studies is delighted to announce that Owen Nichols, Director of the Center for Coastal Studies’ Marine Fisheries Research Program, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the John Annala Fishery Leadership Award by the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI).

This award, which honors an early career scientist who is doing research that is relevant to fisheries in New England, was established in 2013 to recognize the contributions that John Annala, the GMRI’s first Chief Scientific Officer, made to the Institute, and to fisheries science and management community in the northeast.

“Owen’s research on the ecology of squid, an important emerging species, and his commitment to doing collaborative research with the fishing industry are a great example of the kind of work that the award was meant to recognize”, stated Andrew Pershing, Chief Scientific Officer at GMRI.

“I’m honored to have been chosen for the John Annala award,” said Nichols. “The work that we do at the Center for Coastal Studies and at GMRI would be impossible without the support of the fishermen who strive to unite the fishing and scientific communities to do science that matters.”

Nichols was presented with the award at the Regional Association for Research on the Gulf of Maine (RARGOM) Annual Science Conference in Portsmouth, NH on Wednesday, October 13, 2016.
