Marine Policy Initiative
The Center’s public policy program examines issues and conflicts affecting the coastal and marine environment and seeks creative solutions based on the principles of conservation biology, sustainability, and ecosystem based management.
In conjunction with its public policy studies, the Center conducts public forums involving scientists, lawmakers, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and resource users. Recent topics have included water quality in Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bays, management of the Gerry E. Studds Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, avian diversity within the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, and proposed regulations of the whale-watching industry.
The Coastal Solutions Initiative was launched in 1997 through a generous grant from the Cox Charitable Trust. Additional support has been provided by the Chase-Miller Public Policy Fund, the Pegasus Foundation, the Canadian Whale Institute, and by contributions from members of the Center for Coastal Studies.
