Beach Cleanups, Tally, and Spinnaker Presentation
The world celebrates our oceans on Saturday, June 8th, in hundreds of ways around the globe. Here at home, the Center for Coastal Studies and the Town of Truro are collaborating on a World Oceans Day beach cleanup at many of our beaches in Truro.
Join the Center for Coastal Studies effort at Beach Point, or the Truro town effort at Corn Hill. Both groups will remove and record marine plastic pollution from the shores of Cape Cod Bay, and we are hoping to break our participation effort of 50 people!
The Center is looking for two separate but equally dedicated groups of volunteers that day for the clean-up and debris inventory. The first group will meet at 9:15 a.m. in the parking lot next to the Top Mast Resort to clean the beaches located around Beach Point from 9:30-11:00 a.m.. The second group will meet at the Center’s Marine Lab at 5 Holway Ave in Provincetown from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. to help sort and record the collected debris. Identifying and tallying the debris from beach cleanups is an important and integral part of tackling marine plastic pollution.
The Town of Truro will meet at Corn Hill at 10 a.m., and volunteers will choose which beach they’d like to clean.
Cleanup bags and gloves will be provided for all volunteers. Light sustenance also offered to volunteers, thanks to Julie Knapp and Twisted Pizza!
Following the clean-ups and inventory, we invite all to join us at 4 p.m. at the Center for Coastal Studies Hiebert Marine Lab (5 Holway Ave, Provincetown), where Marine Education Director Jesse Mechling will give a presentation about the Center’s unique humpback whale skeleton and the story of how she came to rest in Provincetown — Spinnaker: An Entanglement Story.
We hope you’ll join us for one or all of the activities, in celebration of World Oceans Day!
