NHA Lecture: Getting to the Bottom of Sharks, presented by Bryan Legare
November 15, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Presented by the Nantucket Historical Association at the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street, Nantucket. Free, all welcome.
The sharks in the waters off Cape Cod are an important part of the ecosystem. They have always been here, but their numbers have increased dramatically in the last two decades, as has public interest and awareness of them.
Bryan Legare, a marine biologist at the Center for Coastal Studies, will discuss the factors that influence this resurgence, and explain how a greater understanding of shark habitat use in the waters off Cape Cod can help determine how best to manage the population and minimize human interactions.
Bryan Legare has a MS in marine and environmental science from the University of the Virgin Islands and a BS in biology from the University of New Hampshire. He is a marine researcher in the Marine Geology Department at the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) and a seascape ecologist for the Coastal Processes and Ecosystems Laboratory (CaPE Lab). His research includes understanding juvenile shark nursery habitats and abundances of fishes and invertebrates across different habitats.
