December 2015
09 December 2015: The first aerial survey of Cape Cod Bay of the 2016 right whale season! Taking off from Chatham Airport (CQX), the Bay was surveyed completely in a north to south direction. No right whales were sighted – for the data, starting at zeros is good thing, but is less fun for those in the plane. One humpback whale and several dolphins were sighted on this survey. The aerial team has high hopes for the season to come!
23 December 2015: After taking off from Chatham Airport (CQX) and the survey team began flying the tracklines in the north of Cape Cod Bay. No right whales were seen, but 3 humpback whales, 2 minke whales, seals, and over 60 dolphins were observed. Unfortunately dense fog banks and impending low cloud ceilings aborted the survey at the half-way point.
We are grateful to pilot Joe Chronic and his colleagues at New England Specialized Aviation Services for their continued support of the Center’s aerial survey activities.
