    Citizen Scientists

    		  
         
     

    During the first field season (2006) of monitoring the water quality of Cape Cod Bay, citizen scientists (volunteers) were a critical component.  At least 12 sites, from Provincetown to Plymouth, were sampled each week (June – October) during mid-ebb tide by volunteers.  These sites were located further inshore in areas not accessible by boat.  Data on water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and nutrients) were collected.

    The involvement of the citizen scientists and the amount of data contributed by them has benefited the program immensely.  We are planning to expand the network of volunteers and the number of sites each year.
