Global Whale Entanglement Response Network
The Global Whale Entanglement Response Network (GWERN), an initiative to mitigate human impacts to whales, is headquartered at the Center for Coastal Studies.
GWERN builds on an existing partnership between CCS and the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to build a worldwide network of professionally trained and equipped entanglement responders.
The program, which is coordinated by David Mattila, builds capacity through “in country” training workshops using IWC endorsed curriculum; apprenticeships for key trainees; and the establishment of advanced training curricula for growing national networks.
