Center Event Celebrates Women in Science

Dr. Heather Goldstone, Science Editor at WCAI, the Cape and Islands NPR Station, and host of Living Lab on The Point, will be the Keynote Speaker at the Center for Coastal Studies 2017 Homeport Banquet, an annual event that celebrates women in science.

Dr. Goldstone, who holds a Ph.D. in ocean science from M.I.T. and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, reports on local, national and international scientific and environmental issues for news outlets including NPR, PBS News Hour and many print and online publications.

The Homeport Banquet will take place on Saturday, June 10 at 6 pm at Provincetown Town Hall. Proceeds from the event benefit the Ruth Hiebert Memorial Fellowship, which provides scholarships to outstanding women associated with the Center for Coastal Studies who are pursuing advanced degrees in a scientific field.

Ruth was a long-time supporter of the Center whose passion for the natural world, education, and her community were well known on the Cape and beyond.

Last year, the Fellowship was awarded to Elizabeth Larson. Beth joined the Center for Coastal Studies as a volunteer in 2009 and quickly became an integral part of the Center’s Water Quality Monitoring and Right Whale Ecology programs.  Her work with program directors Dr. Amy Costa and Dr. Charles “Stormy” Mayo ultimately led her to specialize in the identification and analysis of phytoplankton, the tiny plants that sustain almost all other marine life.

In September 2016 Beth enrolled in a master’s degree program in the Biology Department of UMass Dartmouth where she continues her research into the microscopic flora of Cape Cod Bay and its relationship to the ecology and environment of this critical right whale habitat.

The recipient of the 2017 Hiebert Memorial Fellowship will be announced at the Banquet.
