Brown Bag Lecture: Six Environmental Crises Facing Our Planet

February 13 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

John Keith presents “Six Crises – A Review of the Six Interlocking Environmental Challenges Facing Our Planet”.

There are many ways to describe the multi-faceted environmental crisis facing our planet. To help understand the problem, Keith divides it into six interlocking challenges: Ocean Health, Climate Change, Soil Destruction/Deforestation/Desertification, Fresh Water, Toxic Chemicals (including toxic air pollution), and Invasive Species.

The lecture will focus on how these various challenges interact with each other, and how we can not hope to make substantial progress on any one aspect unless we consider all of them.

Common root causes for each aspect will be discussed – population growth, our technological capability to massively impact the environment, and an economy focused on growth, consumption and waste. Key indicators to illustrate each aspect will be also presented, as well as the actions required to face these crises, not least of which is the political will to do what is needed.

John S. Keith, P.E., is an environmental executive and engineer with over 45 years experience in industry and government. He has directed many contamination remediation projects in the US and throughout the world. Formerly the Vice President for Environment, Health and Safety for Pfizer, John is now the Senior Technical Adviser for Pure Earth (formerly the Blacksmith Institute).
