Our “right whales love copepods” sweatshirt is perfect for cool summer nights after the sun goes down or snowy (SOMETIMES!) spring days when right whales are plying the waters off Cape Cod for their preferred food – copepods! Smaller than krill, another crustacean popular with baleen whales, adult copepods are sometimes only one or two millimeters, and sometimes even smaller than that! Right whales filter these oily, high calorie critters from the water by skimming along the surface or under the surface with their mouths open so that the copepods catch on their long, fine strands of baleen.
Other details include the CCS logo on the back of the shirt and “Right Whale Research” printed down the left sleeve. The lovely right whale on the front is the work of MAER director Scott Landry, a man of many talents. The idea for this shirt originates with onetime CCS right whale researcher turned copepod/carbon flux researcher, Karen Stamieszkin.
