The Center for Coastal Studies presents “The Azores: Stories of Islands and Whales” by Philip Hoare, on Wednesday, January 25 at 7 pm at Napi’s Restaurant, Provincetown.

For the past 300 years, Cape Cod and the Azores have shared an extraordinarily connected history and culture. It’s a connection most visibly evident in the vast shape of the whale: both places have moved from hunting it, to watching it.  In many other maritime skills there’s a clear physical and historical link between these sea-wrapped locales – that’s clear enough even now, from the traditional Portuguese influence without which Provincetown would be a poorer place.

In his illustrated talk, Philip Hoare, author of The Whale and The Sea Inside, will examine the human and natural history of the Azores, drawing on a series of filming and research expeditions he has made to the Azores.  Philip – a regular visitor to Provincetown from Southampton, England – will discuss the legends, literature and culture of this remarkable archipelago – from Columbus to Darwin, from Moby-Dick to the Mary Celeste – with a particular focus on its extraordinary cetaceans, from common dolphins and rare beaked whales, to the legendary and mysterious sperm whale itself.
